What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a popular aesthetic procedure that removes excess fat from the body, face, or neck and improves the contours and shape of the targeted areas. Also referred to as lipoplasty, liposuction can provide dynamic results when performed by highly trained physicians such as Dr. Wigoda.

Liposuction can be successfully performed on multiple areas of the body, such as the:

How is Liposuction Performed?

During a typical liposuction procedure with Dr. Wigoda, small incisions are made near the treated areas. Incisions are kept small and, when possible, are hidden within the natural folds and creases of the skin. The fatty tissues are injected with a solution of epinephrine and lidocaine, anesthetizing the area and minimizing blood loss during the procedure.

A hollow tube, also known as a cannula, is inserted through the incisions and moved back and forth within the area to break up the fat, which is then extracted through specially-designed vacuum suction. Patients typically have the option to have this procedure under general anesthesia or sedation.

Dr. Wigoda also offers the option of ultrasound-assisted liposuction, which causes fat cells to liquefy and allows the cannula to move and extract the fat more easily. This causes less trauma to the tissues and often results in less healing and less time in the treatment room. This option can be discussed during your consultation at our Cooper City office.

Liposuction Recovery

A compression garment may be provided to help manage swelling following your liposuction treatment. Drains may be placed around the treated area to allow for the removal of excess fluid. Swelling can last for several months. Once the swelling subsides you will begin to see the full results of your liposuction.
